iOS 26 May Add Real-Time Translation to AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2

Apple might be quietly preparing one of its most practical new features yet: real-time language translation on AirPods.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, imagery discovered in the latest iOS 26 beta suggests that the feature will be available on the upcoming AirPods 4 and second-generation AirPods Pro.

How the Feature Works

The leaked images show a possible “translation mode” that users can activate by pinching the stems of both AirPods simultaneously. Once enabled, conversations could be translated in real time, allowing users to communicate across languages without needing to look at their iPhone screens.

The beta also shows four supported languages so far:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Portuguese

Why Apple Hasn’t Announced It Yet

Apple has already showcased translation tools in apps like FaceTime during WWDC, but the company hasn’t mentioned any real-world, AirPods-based translation features.

9to5Mac speculates that this capability may be exclusive to the iPhone 17 lineup, given the processing power required to handle real-time translation without lag. If that’s true, Apple may be holding back the reveal until its September 2025 keynote.

What This Could Mean

If confirmed, this would mark one of the biggest functional upgrades for AirPods yet, transforming them from wireless earbuds into powerful communication tools. Real-time translation could make AirPods indispensable for:

  • Travelers navigating foreign countries
  • Business professionals working with global teams
  • Students and expats living in multilingual environments

When to Expect Confirmation

If Apple is indeed tying this feature to the iPhone 17 launch, we’ll likely hear the full details in September 2025, when the company unveils its next-generation devices and iOS 26 officially rolls out.

Bottom Line

Real-time translation on AirPods could be a game-changer for communication, bridging language gaps in a seamless, hands-free way. While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, all signs point to an announcement alongside the iPhone 17 this fall.
